Muse AI: what Meta's personal agent is, and how the signup actually works

Meta launched Muse on 8 September 2026. It is not a chatbot — it runs on its own cloud Linux machine and does the task instead of describing it. This page covers what it is, the invite-only signup that stops most people, the 1 billion token referral mechanic, pricing, and the regional limits that most write-ups gloss over. Everything factual is sourced and dated.

How to read this page. Muse is new and its rules are still moving. Every claim below is attributed to a source and dated, and anything unverified is labelled as such. Where we cannot test something ourselves — regional availability is the obvious one — we say so instead of pretending.

What Muse actually is

Most AI products you have used are chat windows. You type, the model answers, you act on the answer yourself. Muse was built around the opposite assumption: you hand it a job and it carries the job out. Meta's own description of the launch is that Muse "doesn't just answer questions, it actually does the work."

Under the hood that means every account is attached to a real Linux virtual machine in Meta's cloud — the Muse Secure VM — with a filesystem, a terminal shell and internet access. Muse works on that machine rather than pretending to. Practical consequences, reported by early users: it writes and runs Python, Bash or Node.js; it reads, writes and organises files including PDFs and spreadsheets; it installs packages when it needs them; and it can build a small utility on the spot and keep it in your Library.

A second agent called Sentinel runs on the same machine, separated from Muse at the system level. Nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless Sentinel approves it, and Sentinel asks you when a decision is yours to make.

Why this matters for you. If you have ever set up a self-hosted agent on a VPS — renting the box, installing the agent, wiring up credentials, keeping it patched — Muse is that whole arrangement with the machine included and the wiring already done. The trade is that the machine belongs to Meta and sits behind Meta's approval layer.

How to sign up for Muse

The signup is where most people give up, so here is the full sequence as reported by users who completed it. Meta's availability check and the invite window are both real gates, not formalities.

  1. Go to the official signup, not a mirror.

The web entry point is muse.ai/join. There are also iOS and Android apps. Use the official domain — several lookalike domains have appeared since launch, and the referral code is not worth the risk.

  2. Expect a Meta account, not a Facebook login.

Per hands-on write-ups, you sign in with a Meta account and, on the web, verify with your phone number. Logging in with Facebook or Instagram is a different account system and does not carry the same entitlements.

  3. Set up your Muse.

You give the agent a name and an identity — this is presented as part of onboarding, not an optional extra. Muse is designed to be talked to like a person, including through WhatsApp.

  4. Redeem an invite code within 48 hours.

Open Settings → General → Redeem invite code and enter a code. Do it in your first session. This is the single most-missed step and the one that costs the most when it is missed — see the next section.

  5. Connect only what you want it to touch.

Access is granted per app and per capability. For email, for example, you choose whether Muse can only read your mail or also send on your behalf. Nothing publishes, sends or spends without your approval.

What we have not verified. We have not completed a signup ourselves, so we cannot confirm the exact screen-by-screen flow, and Meta has changed onboarding details since launch. Treat the steps above as the reported path and confirm against the live interface.

The regional wall: why "US only" matters

This is the part that decides whether any of the rest of this page is useful to you.

At launch, Muse is described across coverage as available to US adults only, on iOS, Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp. Meta has said support for AI glasses is coming. No general-availability date for other countries has been announced.

Some write-ups describe signing up "from a restricted region" by connecting through a US endpoint. We are reporting that this is what those users did; we are not recommending it, because circumventing a regional restriction runs against the platform's terms, may break the account later, and — importantly for anyone writing about this — is not something a guide should be built around. A referral code does not remove the regional restriction. If you are outside the US, the code is not the thing standing between you and an account.

Practical takeaway. If you are in the US, the invite code is worth claiming and the 48-hour window is the only thing you need to be careful about. If you are not in the US, the honest answer today is that there is no reliable official route, and anyone telling you a code will get you in is selling you something.

Tokens, the 1 billion referral, and the 48-hour window

This is the mechanic generating most of the search traffic around Muse, and it is widely described incorrectly. Here is how it works.

Muse meters usage in tokens — the same rough unit every model uses, meaning the chunks of text it reads and writes while working. The free plan gives a weekly allowance reported at about 100 million tokens, resetting each week. For scale, one reviewer reported spending roughly 11 percent of that allowance in a week while having Muse build games, music, animations and a mock desktop.

Separately, there is an invite code. The mechanic:

The 48-hour window is the trap. If you create an account and come back two days later, the redeem field may still be visible while the bonus is no longer claimable — it is one shot per account. Redeem during your first session.

On the arithmetic. 1 billion tokens sounds enormous next to a 100 million weekly allowance, and it is — roughly ten weeks of the free tier, stacked on top. What that buys you in practice depends heavily on how much work you give the agent, because agent tasks burn far more tokens than chat.
Our position on codes. This page deliberately does not publish a referral code of our own. The field is already crowded with pages that exist only to farm referrals, and Meta can change the rules at any time. If you want a code, take one from someone you actually know, or from a source that explains the mechanic as clearly as we have tried to above — just redeem it within the 48-hour window.

What Muse costs

PlanReported priceWhat you get
Free$0Weekly allowance reported at about 100 million tokens, resetting weekly; core agent features
Powerabout $20 / monthHigher usage ceiling for regular agent work
Maximumabout $100 / monthHighest reported tier, for heavy continuous workloads

Meta has also said it intends, over the long term, to take a share of transactions carried out through Muse — which is consistent with the payments story below rather than a conventional subscription-only model.

Prices and tier names in this space change faster than pages get updated, so treat the numbers above as as of October 2026 and confirm on Meta's own page before you pay.

Paying inside Muse

When Muse reaches a checkout, it can pay using Link, built by Stripe — and Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections, covering damaged or lost items, price drops, no-fee returns and a return guarantee on eligible purchases. Link's agent wallet generates a one-time-use card, so your real card details are not handed to the seller. Shop Pay and 1Password support were announced as coming.

Muse Image and Muse Video — a different product with a similar name

There is a genuine source of confusion worth clearing up, because "Muse AI" is used for two different things.

The first is Muse, the personal agent described above. The second is Muse AI, the name commonly used for Meta's media-generation model family — Muse Image and Muse Video — built by Meta Superintelligence Labs and launched around July 2026 under the internal codename Mango, following the Muse Spark language model.

Muse Image is not a separate app. It is embedded in the Meta AI app, meta.ai, Instagram Stories (US) and WhatsApp (in a limited set of countries), with Facebook and Messenger announced as coming. Reputedly it is used by billions of people across Meta's apps, which is the whole point of shipping it inside existing products rather than as a standalone download.

What distinguishes it, per Meta, is that it treats image generation as an agentic task rather than a single pass: it can search the web to ground an image in current facts, write and run code to produce accurate charts, diagrams and working QR codes, and reflect on and refine its own output. Images made in Meta AI also carry an invisible watermark that Meta says survives cropping, resizing, compression and screenshots.

Which one are you looking for? If you want an agent that books and buys, you want Muse. If you want image and video generation, you want Muse Image / Muse Video — and you will find it inside the Meta AI app and Instagram rather than at a separate signup.

Muse vs ChatGPT and Gemini

Comparing feature lists is less useful than comparing the delivery model, because that is where the real difference sits.

Muse (Meta)ChatGPT / Gemini
Primary shapeAgent with its own cloud machineChat assistant, with agent features added
Execution environmentDedicated Linux VM per account, shell and filesystemTool sandboxes and connectors
Data boundariesSeparate Sentinel agent gates outbound actionsPer-integration permissions
AvailabilityUS adults at launch, invite-influenced signupBroad international
Free tierWeekly token allowance, about 100 million reportedFree tiers with model limits
PaymentsLink by Stripe, one-time-use card; agent purchase protectionsAdd-on and integrations

The honest summary: Muse is further along on "give it a job and walk away," particularly because of the machine it runs on. ChatGPT and Gemini are further along on availability, breadth of integrations and the maturity of their ecosystems. If you are outside the US, this comparison is academic for now.

Passwords, payments and privacy

An agent that can send email and spend money raises obvious questions. What Meta has stated:

One caution that applies to all of this: these are the vendor's stated commitments, not independently audited guarantees, and they are exactly the kind of terms that get revised after a launch. If you plan to let an agent act on your accounts, re-read them at the point you connect anything sensitive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Muse AI the same as Meta AI?

No. Meta AI is the assistant you may already have in WhatsApp, Instagram and the Meta AI app. Muse is a separate product — a personal agent with its own cloud machine — and Muse Image / Muse Video is the media model family embedded inside Meta AI.

Can I use Muse if I am not in the US?

Not through an official route at launch. Coverage describes Muse as US-only for adults 18+, and no international availability date has been announced. Some users report signing up through a US endpoint; we are not recommending that route, and a referral code does not change the regional restriction.

What happens if I miss the 48-hour window?

The bonus cannot be claimed. The window is one shot per account — the code is entered in Settings → General within 48 hours of creating the account, and the field may still appear afterwards while no longer being redeemable. Be patient with the wording and redeem in your first session.

How do I get a Muse invite code?

Anyone with an account can generate one, and each code can be used by up to 20 people. Rather than taking a code from an anonymous page, get one from someone you know, or from a write-up that explains the mechanic honestly. Then redeem it within the 48-hour window so both sides actually get the tokens.

Do the referral tokens ever expire?

Reported as no. They are listed as additional tokens separate from the weekly allowance, and unlike the weekly meter they are described as not expiring.

Can Muse really buy things for me?

It can reach a checkout and complete a purchase with your approval, using Link by Stripe, which generates a one-time-use card so your real card details stay hidden. Meta also says Muse is the first agent covered by Link's purchase protections. The approval step is mandatory, not optional.

What is Muse Spark?

Muse Spark is the Meta model that powers Muse. A Muse Spark 1.3 release in September 2026 is reported to have improved long-running task and agent performance, and it is what the product's benchmark results are attributed to.

Where is Muse actually available — web, app or WhatsApp?

Reported surfaces are the web app at muse.ai, iOS and Android apps, and WhatsApp. A macOS app is also described, working inside native Files, Messages, Calendar, Notes and Mail with access granted per app. AI glasses support has been announced as coming.
