AI video tools that shut down — and what's still running
Every status below comes from a direct request to the tool's own domain, not from a directory listing or a news summary. The checked date is the date of the last pass, so you can judge how fresh each row is.

How we check
For every tool we request the domain over both HTTPS and HTTP and read what comes back. A tool is recorded as shut down when the domain does not resolve, returns an HTTP error status, serves a domain-for-sale or parking page, or returns a page with no product on it.
One distinction matters more than any other here: a blocked request is not a shutdown. Several tools that are alive and well return a 403 or an interstitial challenge to automated requests. We read the response body to separate a bot block from a closure, and we never list a tool as dead on the strength of a status code alone.
Why this list keeps growing
Video generation is one of the most compute-expensive things a consumer AI product can do, so each active user costs real money to serve. A tool that prices below its own compute cost has to keep raising money to cover the difference. When the funding stops, the quietest ending is an acquisition: the technology gets absorbed into the buyer's product, the standalone tool is retired, and the domain is left to lapse.
Vidnami is the clearest example on this page. It was one of the most widely linked-to video tools of its era — it still appears in "best AI video generator" roundups written years after it closed — and its domain no longer resolves at all.
If you built a workflow on one of these
The practical lesson is that export routines matter more than feature lists. Pick a tool that lets you get your source files out in a format you can re-import elsewhere, and test that export before you need it. If you want to keep making the same kind of video without re-picking a tool, these cover the routes that are genuinely free:
- Image to video, compared — every generator type, what free tiers cap, and a prompt pattern that stops faces morphing.
- Free AI video tools, compared — what each tool type costs and what to verify before you pay.
- The AI 80s trend and Hotel Lobby AI — worked examples of the two-step workflow, with copy-ready prompts.
Questions
Which AI video tools have shut down?
As of 2026-10-06, our direct checks found 12 of the 50 AI video tools we track no longer serving a working product. Every entry in the table above records exactly what we got back when we checked the domain.
How do you know a tool has shut down?
We request the domain directly and look at what comes back. A tool is marked as shut down when the domain does not resolve, returns an HTTP error, serves a parked or for-sale page, or returns a placeholder with no product on it. A 403 or a bot challenge is NOT treated as a shutdown — several live tools block automated requests, so we read the page body to tell a block apart from a closure.
How often is this page updated?
The status column is regenerated by re-checking every domain. The checked date at the top of the page is the date of the most recent pass, so you can judge how fresh any row is rather than trusting a general claim that it's current.
Why do AI video tools shut down so often?
Video generation is compute-heavy, so every active user costs real money to serve. Tools that price below their compute cost have to keep raising money to cover the gap. When that stops, an acquisition is often the quietest ending: the technology gets absorbed, the standalone product is retired, and the domain is left to lapse. Vidnami is the clearest example — it was one of the most linked-to video tools of its era and its domain no longer resolves.
A tool I use isn't listed. Can you add it?
Yes — the list is maintained by hand and expanded over time. The contact route is on the About page.
